Japanese bananas for bananas

Summer is finally here! While I’m not a fan of the 6 months of bitter winter cold, it makes the next 4 or so months of summer all the more joyous. People start to come out from hibernation, flowers are in bloom, beach parties and BBQs all make for an amazing summer in Japan. But this season also marks the beginning of one of the most quintessentially Japanese crazes I’ve yet to experience…the price of fruits. People here are willing to throw down 100 bones for a watermelon. Peaches for $5, cherries for $10…the madness!
But rather than being able to buy any fruit at the lowest price possible, you really start to appreciate produce through the seasons. Persimmons in fall, oranges in winter, cherries in summer and apples in spring!
